Hello and welcome to RoamSweetRoam, a blog written by myself (Ellie) about mine and my boyfriend’s travels around the world. Both Connor and I are 28 years old and we are currently backpacking around Australia on a budget.
Before coming to Australia, we were living and working in Lincolnshire, England, based in a small village called Swineshead. It is about as pretty as its name, believe me. It’s safe to say that we were left wondering if this was it for us.. or whether there was something much more exciting in store. At 27 years old, we made the difficult and insane decision to quit the jobs that we loved, give up the tenancy on our first home together, and say goodbye to our friends and family. We got on the plane to Melbourne and didn’t look back. This is not the first time either of us have given up our lives to travel, but it is the first time we received a lot of comments and remarks ‘advising’ us to stay in our jobs and not give up everything for the unknown. It’s true at 27, it is much harder to start again in another country not knowing where the next pay check will come from.
I interrailed around Europe for a month when I was 19 in my summer break after the first year of university and it was one of the most special and lifechanging trips with my very best of friends. This inspired us to save even harder and for longer, to go on a once in a life time trip to South East Asia. We fulfilled our dreams and travelled SE Asia in 2018 for 5 months, and boy did it not disappoint. The idea of staying in the UK and settling in a career seemed like a ludicrous idea and yet again we quit our jobs and travelled to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa in 2019. This trip was supposed to last at least a year but unfortunately, life had other plans. Roll on March 2020 and a little known thing called Corona Virus meant that we lost our jobs, our hostel shut down and we were left homeless with no way of getting home. Flights were astronomical prices and being cancelled left, right and centre. Thankfully, after a month of holing up in an Air BnB, we used the last of our money on a ridiculously expensive flight to get home to the UK.
Connor was also unlucky enough to have had his first backpacking experience affected by Covid-19. Connor came to Australia in 2019 on a WHV and managed to live in Cairns, dive in the Great Barrier Reef and experience life on the East Coast before he too had his life changed by the virus. Luckily Connor was living in a shared home with his friends, and was in a stable remote job that he could continue doing for the rest of his year, however it meant most travel options were out of question. This was certainly not how he envisioned his year abroad. Fast forward to 2022 and Australia’s borders reopened allowing us to book flights and get the hell out of the UK! Since then we have travelled through Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmania and are now living and working in Sydney. I can’t think of a better way to spend my downtime than to record everything we do on our own little corner of the internet, and if we manage to help anyone with tips along the way then even better!
